Don’t let a flat tire completely ruin your day. We’re outlining what to do when you get a flat, and when it’s time to schedule RAM service at Cook Chrysler Dodge RAM.

Remain Calm

We know getting a flat while driving can be frightening. Do your best to stay calm. Don’t slam on the brakes. Slowly lift your foot from the accelerator and keep your wheels straight. When it’s safe to do so, slowly move towards the shoulder.

Find a Safe Space

It’s never a good idea to drive on a flat, but it’s better to replace a damaged rim than risk getting hit by a car in heavy traffic. Try to find a safe place to change your tire. If you must stay on the shoulder, set up a perimeter with reflective triangles. Don’t forget to turn on your hazards and parking brake.

Change Your Flat Tire

Once you know you’re safe, it’s time to change your flat tire.

  1. Make sure you have everything you need – spare tire, lug wrench, and jack.
  2. Partially loosen your lug nuts.
  3. Check your owner’s manual for the best position to place your jack.
  4. Raise your vehicle approximately six inches.
  5. Remove the lug nuts completely and the flat tire.
  6. Add on the spare tire and reattach the lug nuts.
  7. Lower your vehicle until the spare tire is resting on the ground and retighten the lug nuts.
  8. Lower your vehicle completely and tighten the lug nuts a final time.
  9. Remove the jack and put all your supplies away.

Once you’ve changed your tire, reach out to our RAM dealership near Havre de Grace, MD to order a replacement. And, in the meantime, schedule tire maintenance to get the most out of your tires!
